PUSH PULL OUTPUT TRANSFORMERS
Push-Pull Guitar Amp circuits utilize a pair or quad set of vacuum tubes to produce sweet, soulful music in a configuration that generally requires smaller transformer cores than a comparable wattage SE circuit. P-P Output Transformers are used used to match the impedence of a pair/quad of vacuum tubes to a speaker load. There is not the need to carry significant DC Currents that saturate the magnetic field in such a circuit so the laminated core structures are generally interleaved 1x1 to maximize coil inductance. More Inductance (Henries) generally translates to improved Bass frequency response. Low “leakage” losses from interleaved windings generally result in better treble response.
Guitar speakers typically have a usable frequency response of 82Hz to about 5Khz. In the design of these OT's I’ve reverse engineered some 18W to 22W output transformers I enjoy, then boosted the Inductance using high quality laminations and careful winding techniques to get low end output to "dropped D" range. If it sounds laborious to produce such a winding and core correctly, it is. This design is the culmination of 2 years of prototyping in my shop, amp proveouts and production approval sampling offshore to get the most bang for the hobbyist's buck. You may find you like it too....it's not $85, try one.
