18W TMB LITE

18WATT TMB LITE AMPLIFERS with MPS Protoype PT285-V, OT18PP-H Horiz Painted

Finished 18WATT TMB LITE's in Cocobolo+Cane and Zebrawood+Cane.
I generally Build (2) and sell (1) to pay for the materials.  I sold the both locally.  This version seems pretty marketable....I'm going have to do another pair.

CHAMPII

Current project are two (2) Heads based upon the Fender 80's "Rivera" CHAMPII 6V6 Push Pull amp.  I'm using my SuperChamp for reference.  The CHAMPII was similar but had no reverb.  The layouts for a SuperChamp and a ChampII were quite similar.

I'm using a 19" Chassis & a Blackface Head Cabinet from Check Electronics.  The CHAMPII has a Mid-boost on a switched Pot & uses those $35 CE Multisection Caps.  I'm trying out a laser etched aluminum faceplate from BNP Lasers this time.

None of that Fender "Paper" eyelet board stuff for my ChampII..........

Got the 1st one finished 6/14/08.  Wow!  This is way different than the EL84's I've built.  It really nails Billy F Gibbon's.  I actually like the overdrive a little better than the original SuperChamp. It may be because the OT15PP is actually a bigger OT than stock.  I'm going to need a 3/4 closed or closed back cabinet for this set-up.  It rocks.

A few funky things about this circuit are:

  • (4) Section CE cap with an 80uF 1st section- I think this big energy storage & the diode rectifiers may have given it some slamming response.
  • Pull-out Mid-boost on the treble pot.  It's more of a scoop I think.
  • Big Orange Drops everywhere
  • Typical Fender Class AB - I had to pull -35V off the tranny HiV outputs
  • I used the Fender 100 Ohm pot for Hum- I like that set-up.

My deviations from the original here:

  • Put it in a larger Head Cabinet (Check Electronics)
  • I've separated the transformers and both are surface mounted
  • I have a switch on it for 8K Ohm or 7KOhm inputs
  • I've put the 4/8/16 Ohm jacks on it as well as the line out
  • I used a center tapped output PT275- original PT was non-center-tapped.

I'm thinking now that after I build the second one (for sale) I may put a third one together with 6L6's.

Robin has a cool aesthetic working on his "Cake Pan Heaters"- there's a McAIR F-18 thing going too.  Looks very military & cool
